Immutable Backup Storage in Michigan

Retention controls + recovery access

Immutable Backup Storage for Michigan businesses.

Immutable storage can restrict changes or deletion of protected data for a defined period. CTS Companies helps businesses consider where that protection belongs in a backup design, how retention is administered and how recovery would work when the ordinary environment cannot be trusted.

The business question

Protect the recovery copy from the next change.

A second copy offers limited reassurance if the same compromised credentials can alter or erase it. Immutability should be considered with access separation, retention settings and a usable restore process. The useful discussion starts with the failure you want the recovery copy to withstand.

The production administrator account is compromised.

The recovery design should explain whether that account can affect protected backup copies, how the team obtains trusted access and where a restore can run. A storage setting alone does not answer those operational questions.

Define the service

What the relationship needs to cover.

The useful scope connects the technical capability with the people and operating work around it.

Retention boundaries

Identify which data is protected, when the protection begins and when it expires. Review the platform’s actual retention behavior rather than rely on an immutable label alone.

Administrative separation

Discuss who can configure protection, access the storage and recover data. Separate credentials and documented recovery access can be as important as the storage feature itself.

Capacity and recovery planning

Understand how retained copies consume space, what happens when capacity is constrained and how information reaches a clean recovery destination.

From discussion to operation

Make the next step explicit.

Start with the current environment, define the responsibility and agree on how the work will be reviewed.

  1. 01

    Review the threat and workload

Identify the protected backup sets, current permissions and scenarios that could affect the available copies.

  2. 02

    Confirm the storage behavior

Review supported retention controls, deletion restrictions and administration. Align the selected approach with recovery needs and applicable retention requirements.

  3. 03

    Validate access and restoration

Test the agreed recovery path and document the people, credentials and destination it requires. Review changes through an explicit process.

Immutability is a property of a particular configuration and retention period. It does not mean every copy is offline, every threat is prevented or the recovered application will automatically be usable.

Questions before you decide

Understand what you are buying.

These distinctions help make the service conversation more useful.

Is immutable the same as offline?

No. A copy can be online while protected against specified changes. Offline separation and immutability address related but different parts of backup protection.

Can retention settings create problems?

They can affect capacity, cost and deletion flexibility. Discuss the retention period, storage growth and governing requirements before applying restrictions that cannot easily be reversed.

Do we still need restore tests?

Yes. Protection against modification does not by itself validate the backup contents, the recovery credentials or the destination needed for a usable restore.
